Myanmar to hold peace talks in China with Kachin rebels

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 03 Februari 2013 | 14.02

YANGON (Reuters) - The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) said on Saturday it had agreed to hold talks with Myanmar's government in China next week, to try to end stubborn conflict with the military that has intensified in the past two months.

The KIA said in a statement the Chinese government "will take a role as a witness and mediate during the meeting" adding that it urged "the Kachin community, our friends and supporters around the world to pray for our leaders."

The meeting will be held on Monday in the Chinese border town of Ruili, which has hosted three rounds of talks since a 17-year ceasefire broke down in June 2011. The two sides have met at least eight times but have failed to agree on terms for a permanent truce.

The talks could reduce tensions in a conflict that has displaced tens of thousands of civilians and seen an unprecedented use of fighter jets and helicopter gunships, an escalation that has worried China, which borders Myanmar.

A lasting truce could be hard to reach, however, and would require at least one party to soften its stance. The government first wants a ceasefire deal signed, which the KIA has refused to do until concrete terms of a political deal are offered.

The fighting has also cast doubts over whether President Thein Sein, a former general, has full control over the country's military. He has issued repeated calls for troops not to attack the KIA, which the rebels, witnesses and independent journalists say the army has not heeded.

In an announcement on state-owned MRTV on Friday, the government said it was preparing to hold talks with the KIA and its political arm, the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO). Other ethnic minority groups that had already agreed truces would help facilitate dialogue.

Since late 2011, Myanmar has agreed ceasefires with 10 rebel groups, including the Karen National Union (KNU), which had fought the central government since 1949 in what was the world's longest-running separatist insurgency. The conflict with the KIA is the only one yet to be halted.

Representatives of two of those groups would assist in Monday's talks, a government negotiator told Reuters, requesting anonymity. He would not identify which groups they were.

Whatmore praises "incredible pace bowling" by South Africa

By Nick Said

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore believes an onslaught by the South African pace bowlers in the morning session on day two of the second test at the Wanderers on Saturday was the best he has ever seen.

Dale Steyn took six for eight as Pakistan collapsed to their lowest test score of 49. He was ably supported by Jacques Kallis, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel in what Whatmore said was a mixture of pace and skill.

"I have never seen two hours of such relentless attack, it was incredible pace bowling," Whatmore, who was born in Sri Lanka and represented Australia, told a news conference.

"Most of our batsman were out to terrific balls. I think we scored something like 34 runs in the first session? It is unheard of."

Whatmore had special praise for Steyn, who he said was nearly unplayable.

"His pace and skill on this pitch is what makes him so special. I am obviously unhappy with the result of today, but there were reasons for it. It was incredible bowling," he said.

South Africa were 207 for three at the close, a lead of 411.

Steyn played down his performance, saying the whole team had responded to a dressing-down from captain Graeme Smith after they were bowled out for 253 on Friday.

"Graeme sat the guys down this morning and said he wanted a 100 percent day from us. He felt we didn't give that yesterday," Steyn said. "We don't have to have many of these chats so I think it had a hand in our performance."

The world's number one fast bowler said after his initial success in removing three of Pakistan's top order, he returned to find he could extract even more out of the pitch to clean up the tail.

"I think the ball actually swung a bit more as it got older, and the wicket assisted it also. It was a great effort from all the bowlers, even Morne, who didn't get a wicket, was hitting the gloves and bowling really well," he said.

Steyn said Smith's decision to bat again instead of enforcing the follow-on had nothing to do with giving the bowlers a rest.

"We just felt we wanted to put Pakistan completely out of the game. The pitch is easier to bat on in the afternoons so we wanted to take advantage of that," he said.

Wakaso double helps Ghana end Cape Verde fairytale

By Mike Collett

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (Reuters) - Substitute Mubarak Wakaso hit two goals as four-times champions Ghana ended the fairytale run of Cape Verde Islands with a 2-0 African Nations Cup quarter-final victory on Saturday.

Wakaso struck twice in the second half, once from the penalty spot, as Ghana clinched a semi-final meeting with Burkina Faso or Togo.

Ghana were fortunate to break the deadlock after 54 minutes at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Referee Rajinjapasad Seechurn of Mauritius harshly ruled against Cape Verde defender Carlitos as he and Asamoah Gyan went for the ball and the Ghanaian went tumbling to the ground.

Wakaso, who had replaced Albert Adomah seven minutes earlier, made no mistake from the spot as he lashed the ball down the middle while goalkeeper Vozinha leapt to his left.

Cape Verde had a chance to equalise within a minute but Heldon's shot went narrowly wide.

Platini also went close for the islanders when he was denied by an acrobatic save from Fatau Dauda who then did even better to deny Djaniny in the closing minutes.

Wakaso added the second goal from a Ghana breakaway in the last minute when he slotted the ball into an empty net after Vozinha had gone up for a set piece at the other end.

Earlier, there was nothing to choose between the teams in a first half in which both sides played some good football in midfield without producing a single shot on target.

Cape Verde, making their debut appearance in the Nations Cup finals, were far from overawed in the biggest game in their relatively brief international history.

The islanders had two excellent opportunities to take the lead in the opening 22 minutes.

Heldon, who scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Angola on Sunday, fired high and wide from the first and then thumped another chance way over the bar after some good build-up play.

Ghana, despite looking sharper on the ball and weaving some nice flowing patterns around the Cape Verde defence, lacked any incisive threat with the usually dangerous Gyan too much on the periphery.

That changed in the second half when Wakaso came into the midfield and livened things up.

His two goals kept alive Ghana's dreams of a fifth title, 31 years after their last triumph in 1982. (Editing by Tony Jimenez)

England are ready for Ashes, Gillespie warns Australia

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 02 Februari 2013 | 14.02

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Former test pace bowler Jason Gillespie has warned his compatriots that England will be ready for back-to-back Ashes series this year and for Australia to wrest back the famous urn will be a daunting task.

Gillespie, who took 259 wickets in 71 tests between 1996 and 2005, is well-placed to comment on the strength of the English game given he is currently coach of the Yorkshire county side.

"They are incredibly confident over here but they deserve to start favourites, England, no doubt about it," Gillespie told the Australian newspaper on Saturday.

"I think potentially they could underestimate our bowling. I've been speaking about it quite regularly over here and saying, 'Don't underestimate the strength of Australia's pace bowling attack'.

"But England won't underestimate Australia. They're too clever for that and I know the England management has already been doing a lot of research.

"They've been planning and researching for a long time. I've got no doubt they'll be wary."

Australia have brought on a band of young seamers ready to take on their arch-rivals home and away with the likes of James Pattinson, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Jackson Bird causing much excitement.

Gillespie was quick to remind his countrymen that the English bowling unit so crucial to the 3-1 victory in the last Ashes series remained intact and ready to confront an Australian batting order without the retired Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey.

"England's bowling is very good at the moment," he said. "Coming up against the Australian batting order, they will rightly feel they're in the game. They feel they can put Australia under pressure and can have Michael Clarke coming in consistently very early, at two or three down for not very many.

"James Anderson is one of the best going around. He'll lead the attack, (Steve) Finn is a very good bowler, (Tim) Bresnan is a very good bowler, (Stuart) Broad has had a bit of an up-and-down time but he's also a very good bowler.

"Graeme Swann is one of the best spin bowlers in the world, if not the number one. Their batting is strong and they've got the best wicketkeeper-batsman in the world (Matt Prior) so they're in a good place."

Gillespie expressed sympathy with Cricket Australia's much-maligned rotation policy, although he conceded they could have sold it to the public better.

The 37-year-old also had a great deal of time for Nathan Lyon, who has come under continual fire since emerging as Australia's top test spin bowler in the wake of the 2010-11 Ashes debacle.

"To me Nathan Lyon is a wonderful bowler, the fastest finger spinner in Australian history to get 50 Test wickets," he said.

"He's had some ups and downs but he's certainly someone I'd like to see Australia persevere with because I think he's just got a little bit of (something) about him as well.

"He has attitude. I just think he has something about him as an Australian cricketer." (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Amlan Chakraborty)

Bulls may charge before Budget; bet on NBFCs: Dipan Mehta

Dipan Mehta, Member, BSE & NSE, says that one can anticipate some buying in anticipation of a good Budget. Generally, we have observed in the past that earnings run in a particular trend, so if the trend is turning for the earnings then this good quarterly number could be followed by two three more good quarters coming through perhaps because of base effect perhaps because of other cyclical factors. If that is the case then it will be the trigger for the markets to rally in 2013.

Below is the edited transcript of his interview to CNBC-TV18.

Q: Last week we saw a bit dip in the markets where the Nifty closed down more than a percent. Is the market is entered into a sluggish terrain where it could be a slow grind till the time the Budget comes up or do you think that this up move will continue?

A: We could be in this particular range for next one or two weeks. The Budget will come at the end of the months and that would get the bulls excited. One can anticipate some buying in anticipation of a good Budget. Inspite of good earnings seasons one should see sideways movement in next 8-10 trading sessions.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) policy was also in line and slightly better than street expectations. The flows in the market are evenly matched; foreign institutional investor (FII) buying is matched by domestic investor selling. Apart from that, Bharti Airtel did not deliver and more or less the markets have run up in past two to three months and maybe consolidating at these levels. However, on can expect some buying to emerge towards the end of the month when the Budget is round the corner.

Q: The one trend that we have seen this earnings season has been that it has been far better than what the street was expecting be it Punjab National Bank ( PNB ), Infosys  and Reliance . Next week we have some big ones that are coming out as well in the runup to earnings are there any stocks that you would be picking up?

A: The earnings season so far has been pretty well and I know it gets ugly as we go along as all the bad results come towards the end of the earnings season. But nevertheless whatever numbers we have seen so far there have been more hits than misses. It is evident that the banks, NBFCs, pharmaceutical companies, select IT companies and most of the consumer oriented FMCG and consumer oriented companies have delivered.

Two wheelers, telecom and the engineering construction group have disappointed and that trend will remain for one more quarter as well. Investors should looking at next three months, should focus on ones which have delivered on the quarterly numbers for December. The Budget always tends to make or break the trend for the next few months thereafter.

So far, by and large the numbers have been very good. Let us keep our fingers crossed that this could perhaps be the earnings season which could be the turning point where after several quarters of tepid growth we are seeing an up tick.

Q: On Oil India offer for sale (OFS). It received a very strong subscription on Friday and some people are recommending a switch out of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation ( ONGC ) and into Oil India because of the run up that ONGC has seen and the good valuations that Oil India has. How would you approach both these names and what would your recommendation be?

A: Most of the PSU oil companies including Oil India are good trading bets. The government has finally got practical about how it is suppose to go about the disinvestment program where it is offering adequate discount. The most heartening fact is that investors in the PSU stocks have made money in the earlier ones and that is bringing more and more investors to apply for future issuances and that is a very healthy and positive sign which means the government is being quite pragmatic about its disinvestment program.

However, from an investment point of view the entire PSU oil sector still remains well under government control and the deregulation is just on paper. The stocks have come off extremely cheap valuations but going forward for these stocks to rally and come off their own and take leadership position, one needs more than just minor tinkering with diesel prices, something pragmatic or major needs to be done, whereby investors are convinced that now these companies will be run on professional basis without government interference and I don't see that happening in the near future.

So, while the rally is present investors can make trading bets, some who have invested earlier in the years could look at lightening up but for long-term investors oil companies cannot be part of the core holding.

Q: You have one idea that you would give us. I know you don't like to generally give trading ideas but as an investment call anything for next week?

A: We are very positive on the NBFCs and Bajaj Finance is the best in the pack, which is again with the usual disclosure that we have investments and recommendation.

Bajaj Finance looks valued attractively and business model is also liked per se. It is not completely focused only on the auto sector, it has a slightly more de-risk business model compared to other listed NBFCs. NBFCs, private sector banks, pharmaceutical companies and select IT companies that should be the broad canvas that investors should look at and invest depending upon how the performances and what is the level of risk appetite.

Religare Capital says tech error caused unusual trades

MUMBAI (Reuters) - A technology glitch at Religare Capital Markets caused "unintended transactions", the brokerage said on Saturday, a day after deeply discounted sale of large blocks of shares in Tata Motors and UltraTech Cement hit the markets.

National Stock Exchange Ltd said on Friday it was investigating the block sales in two stocks, the latest in a series of unusual price movements to rattle the market.

"Religare Capital Markets Limited uses third party software for execution of orders on stock exchanges. Due to some technical issue in the software, unintended transactions got executed," the brokerage said in a statement.

"There was no broker error and no loss to any clients," it said, adding the matter was being looked into by the software provider. It said there was no impact on client business and the brokerage would operate normally on Monday.

A total of 2.07 million shares in Tata Motors were sold in six blocks at an average price of 274.92 rupees in the afternoon on Friday, well below the roughly 292 rupee level at which the shares were trading at the time.

Tata shares fell as low as 268.25 rupees before ending the session down 5.49 percent at 281.64 rupees.

Shares in UltraTech, a cement maker, ended down 3.4 percent after an earlier block sale of 41,863 shares took place at an average 1,853.80 rupees, also well below where shares were trading at the time.

Both trades took place around the same time.

Lacklustre markets; BHEL tanks 4% on dismal earnings

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 01 Februari 2013 | 14.02

12:25

Key equity benchmarks are trading flat after up gains seen in the morning. At 12.04 PM, the Sensex is down 4.65 points at 19890.33, and the Nifty down 3 points at 6031.75.
About 1277 shares have advanced, 1107 shares declined, and 1110 shares are unchanged.

Shares of Bharti Airtel slipped 1.05 percent after the telecom major's third quarter  profit declined significantly due to higher forex. The company's Africa operations continue to remain sticky.

From the auto space, Maruti Suzuki is the top gainer on the Sensex rising 1.37 percent after posting a slight uptick in January sales. Bajaj Auto is also up more than a percent ahead of its monthly sales data. Motherson Sumi and Eicher Motors are also up more than a percent.

Pharma stocks are also performing well with Cipla, Lupin and Dr Reddys Labs rising between 1-2 percent.

Meanwhile, engineering major BHEL tanked 4% post dismal third quarter earnings. Its net profit slipped 17.5 percent year-on-year - higher than expected - to Rs 1,182 crore in the December quarter. Revenues dropped by 4.8 percent to Rs 10,041 crore from Rs 10,548 crore during the same period.

Bharti Q3 profit falls 61% QoQ to Rs 284 cr; shares drop

Moneycontrol Bureau

Telecom services major Bharti Airtel's third quarter net profit was eroded by high interest costs, forex losses and depreciation, but Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Mittal said there were some positives as well despite a bleak operating environment.

The company's third quarter consolidated net profit was Rs 284 crore, down 72 percent year-on-year and down 61 percent quarter-on-quarter. Quarterly revenues rose around 10 percent year-on-year to Rs 20,239 crore, but were flat compared to the September quarter.

Forex loss (Rs 261 crore), depreciation and amortisation cost (Rs 316 crore), and net interest costs (Rs 284 crore), pressured the operating margin, which declined to 30.6 percent, compared to 31.3 percent in the September quarter and 32.2 percent the previous year.

"Market conditions have been challenging in recent quarters due to pricing pressures and rising input costs, which have put enormous pressure on the sector and consequently the margins," Mittal said in the earnings press release.

"However, the worst seems to be getting over with corrections taking place in customer acquisition practices and the tariffs, which are driving quality of acquisitions and improving efficiencies. Moreover, on the data front, it is heartening to see strong growth quarter on quarter and across geographies," he said.

The company's average revenue per user (ARPU) in mobile services, a key measure of profitability, rose 4 percent (Rs 8) quarter-on-quarter to Rs 185, but declined 1 percent year-on-year. This, despite minutes of usage increasing 3 percent sequentially and 10 percent year-on-year. Mobile services account for 77 percent of the company's revenues, even as it is trying to diversify its revenue stream and increase the share of data revenues (non-voice).

Voice average revenue per user (ARPU) grew 4 percent to Rs 153 quarter-on-quarter, but declined 3 percent year-on-year, which analysts see as a key concern.

The company's base of mobile service customers in India fell 4 percent QoQ to 1.81 lakh, as the company deactivated many inactive users.

On the positive side, the company reduced the churn rate of its mobile customers in India to 5.9 percent in the December quarter from 8.5 percent in the preceding quarter.

The company said Africa revenues grew by 15 percent YoY, supported by customer base growth of 21 percent, voice traffic increase of 42 percent, and non voice revenue growth of 85 percent. Voice usage per customer has grown YoY by 15 percent from 125 minutes to 144 minutes, the company said.
