Dutch sweep to stunning 5-1 win over Spain

Spain, who lost their opening game of the 2010 tournament to Switzerland, went ahead with a 27th-minute Xabi Alonso penalty but Dutch captain Van Persie equalised with an audacious diving, looping header a minute before the break.

Two goals each by Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben helped the Netherlands destroy world and European champions Spain 5-1 in a sensational World Cup Group B opener on Friday - a repeat of the 2010 final.

Spain, who lost their opening game of the 2010 tournament to Switzerland, went ahead with a 27th-minute Xabi Alonso penalty but Dutch captain Van Persie equalised with an audacious diving, looping header a minute before the break.

The Netherlands, playing with swagger and working tirelessly to close down the holders, went ahead in the 53rd minute when Robben pulled down a long ball from Daley Blind, delivered his trademark cutback and swept the ball home.

Stefan de Vrij bundled in the third in the 64th minute, Van Persie, who also crashed a shot against the bar, got the fourth following a blunder by Spain keeper Iker Casillas and Robben completed the amazing victory in the 80th minute.

Spain facing tough choices after Dutch humiliation

Chastened Spain coach Vicente del Bosque faces some serious soul-searching after his team of champions were brutally exposed and destroyed 5-1 by Netherlands in a shocking World Cup Group B loss on Friday.

Spain's humiliating defeat in Salvador in their opening game, by far the heaviest under Del Bosque since he took over in 2008, was their biggest at a World Cup since they lost 6-1 to Brazil in 1950 and only their fourth competitive loss under the affable 63-year-old.

Although the match started well for the holders and they led 1-0 through Xabi Alonso's penalty, they were ripped to shreds by the rampant Dutch in the second half.

Proven winners of the calibre of goalkeeper Iker Casillas, centre backs Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique and midfielders Xavi and Alonso were simply brushed aside by their opponents' intensity and muscular tactics, with Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie in devastating form.

Fans around the world used to watching Spain effortlessly dominating opponents with their "tiki-taka" brand of passing football watched opened-mouthed as the Dutch poured forward and repeatedly breached the Spanish line.

Although Casillas had a terrible game by his standards, surrendering possession to gift Van Persie his second goal, if it had not been for a number of superb saves the Netherlands could have won even more comfortably.

Spain's desperately ragged performance will leave Del Bosque wondering whether a serious overhaul is needed before they face Chile in their next game on Wednesday.

An indication of the scale of Friday's reverse is that on their way to winning Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, Spain conceded a mere six goals in 19 games.

SOME COMFORT

Del Bosque is unlikely to drop Casillas, the team captain, but Pique could be dropped after the Barcelona player was made to look slow and witless by the Dutch forwards.

Javi Martinez, a converted midfielder with pace and strength, has looked assured at the back in Spain's last two warm-up matches and could partner Ramos.

In midfield, it might be time for Xavi and Alonso to make way, with Koke and Santi Cazorla the obvious replacements.

Reverting to a system without a recognised centre forward, which was so successful at Euro 2012, and playing Cesc Fabregas instead of Diego Costa or Fernando Torres, is another option.

"When a team loses a match it's not just the performance of one single player, it's a weakness in the whole squad," Del Bosque told a news conference.

"I feel very upset and disappointed but I have enough experience to understand this defeat," he added.

"We are all to blame. We have to look ahead and secure a win against Chile."

Del Bosque can take comfort from the fact that Spain lost their opening game at the 2010 World Cup to Switzerland but eventually went through as group winners.

However, unless he can find a way to fix what was wrong with the team on Friday, he and his players may find themselves returning to Spain much earlier than anyone expected.

Even if they manage to finish second in the group, Spain will probably face hosts Brazil in the last 16.

Crude prices to boost as rupee likely to trade down: Karvy

Karvy Commodities has come out with its report on crude oil. "Indian rupee likely to trade down today might help the locally traded oil prices to move higher", says the report.

Karvy Commodities' technical anaysis on Crude oil

Amongst important cues yesterday, US DoE in its weekly inventory report said crude inventories decreased by 2.6 million barrels higher than expected though remain in the upper half of the five-year range for this time of the year. Gasoline inventories increased by 1.7 million barrels whereas distillate stocks rose 900,000 barrels last week. Refinery utilization rate slipped near 3% against expectations that the rate would see gradual but continued increase. Overall the data stood mixed to negative however process remained little changed and managed positive closing. We feel, the current period being the summer driving season for the US wherein we generally see a good oil demand might be keeping oil prices higher.

In other cues for the commodity support came from the International Energy Agency's report earlier that day wherein the agency said supplies need to be increased in second half of this year to compensate likely increase in consumption. This got added support from the OPEC's statement wherein the group said it intends to make no changes in production. Overall we maintain a modestly positive outlook into the commodity though big-bang gains might be missing in case equities around the globe continue to underperform. Also Indian rupee likely to trade down today might help the locally traded oil prices to move higher.

Is your job as good as you are? Think over these 5 things

Written By Unknown on Senin, 09 Juni 2014 | 14.03

Shrilekha Nair

All of us crave for that dream job. We put a great deal of thought in analysing our strengths and limitations, research the industries, evaluate the monetary package, the work profile and so many other variables. Despite all this exercise, there is something we miss out. It is a secret that we are unaware of. And I am revealing it now:

'You are a lot better than you think you are.'

Now, the question really is: Does your job enlighten you in that direction? This might not exactly match your dream. But it could still be a dream job waiting to be discovered.

Here are a few tests to find out:

Does it break your perceptions?
We are great story tellers. We make believable stories and through these we define what we are and what we are not. We tell the world and more importantly we tell ourselves how wonderful we are at selling but poor in organizing, we are fantastic at desk job but bad on field, we can make nice presentations, we cannot draw, we can work with numbers, we cannot get along with certain group of people. In short, we are this and we are not that. Having defined such boundaries, we then comfortably function within the framework.  As time goes by, these perceptions only get rigid.

Our job must shake this comfort and help us break these myths. It is never a smooth transition. It is a battle. We must face situations in job that force us to question such ideas and succumb to the demands of work. Is your set of perceptions today the same as it used to be a year ago? Your answer will indicate whether your job is as good as you.

How about that Ego?
Ego is the biggest enemy of man. Yet, we hold on to it like a piece of gold. Our job is not good enough if it feeds our ego instead of crushing it. From time to time the job must challenge our sense of control. It must humble us and make us realize how little we know. It must build a desire and need in us to learn more, do more.

But here is where we draw a line- while the ego needs to be eliminated, self esteem must be preserved. Every individual irrespective of the title or work profile deserves to be treated with respect. Tough talking might be needed. But there is no excuse for abusive language and insults at workplace under the pretext of getting one to perform.

Kill the ego but protect the self esteem.

Does it offer security?
In the context of job, the term 'security' it is a passé. Workplaces are meant to be competitive where we must keep proving ourselves. It is only natural to feel the need for security. However, our idea of the concept must be corrected. If we are turning to something external as a job for offering us security, we are searching in the wrong place. Security is really experienced only when we realize our potential. The work we do is a means to explore this potential.

A comfortable stress free job is unexciting and can never help us explore ourselves.

And the work –life balance?
If we do not have sufficient work to keep us fully engaged, it is unlikely that we will enjoy life in general. Contrary to what we believe, a low volume of work does not provide a peaceful state of mind. It may provide the free time. But the inefficiency seeps into other aspects of our life and leaves us with a sense of underachievement.

To make the most of our time OFF, we must make the most of our time ON. There must be enough and more work to do so that we learn to get organized and develop innovative ways to tackle each task. Targets and deadlines are good. They stretch us and compel us to find creative ways of cracking them. It forces us towards efficiency. No matter how much we complain, in the end we are left with a sense of accomplishment. That feeling is unmatched.

Who are the people you work with?
Striking cordial work relationship with other people is one of the biggest challenges in a job. Being a people's person is essentially a leadership trait and an art that only few have mastered. Our job must give us ample opportunities to meet and interact with diverse groups of people – some of whom we may get along well with and most of whom we don't. They could be our team members, bosses, colleagues or customers. Each such interaction is an opportunity for us to practice this art. There is absolutely nothing that can happen in seclusion and hence people skills are a sure road to professional growth and personal well being. Patience, tolerance, adaptability, acceptance, are virtues that are hidden inside us. They must be forced to be brought to play. Does your job provide enough scope to explore the talent in you? Are you using those opportunities?

It is a law of nature that no growth happens without pain. Look back at the last few years of your job. How was the journey? If you have done the kind of work you always expected to do, if you achieved what you always knew you would, I am afraid, you are heading for stagnancy and degeneration. If you have surprised yourself more than four times in the last one year, never mind  the so called pressure , a nagging boss or extended work hours, hold on to that dream job.
