FOMC meet: HSBC sees 50% chance of taper commencing today

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Dominic Bunning, Associate Director - FX Strategy, HSBC says that there is a 50 percent likelihood of the Fed QE tapering coming through today's FOMC meet. If that happens, he says, there will be an immediate bounce in the dollar index.

Going forward, he expects South Asian currencies to be under pressure. The RBI would like to keep rupee well supported," he says.

Below is a verbatim transcript of the interview on CNBC-TV18

Q: What about the whole global scenario? We have seen euro rally quite a bit, to around 1.37-1.38. Are you surprised by that? What is your expectation from Fed and how would that lead to any kind of moves on the euro?

A: Euro certainly has been more resilient than we were expecting. I think a few factors have come into play there. When we look at some of the flow dynamics, they have supported the euro, but also this tightening in the euro zone liquidity going into the year end has probably provided some support as well.

From the Fed's side of things we do think there is about a 50:50 chance that we see some tapering coming through at today's meeting. That may well be joined along with changes to the forward guidance to try and ensure that rates hold low for a long period of time.

Really, the key dynamic from the euro is that whereas the Fed is already starting to look towards the exit of quantitative easing (QE), in the European Central Bank (ECB) we are looking at more measures will come through to boost liquidity. So the ECB is still in that process of continuing to ease, continue to loosen policy that talking about potential negative, deposit rates and whereas the Fed is moving away from that QE story. From our perspective, the monetary policy difference should start to tail in 2014.

We are still looking for the euro to depreciate versus the dollar through the course of next year.

Q: What about the dollar index? It is currently at around 80 or so. What would the trajectory look like over there?

A: When we talk about the Fed as well we have got to look at the expectations. To some degree this tapering idea is starting to be priced in more by the markets. If today the tapering is announced, but eventually the market senses the forward guidance is coming to play and we will see rates lower we would expect to see a bounce in the dollar initially.

We certainly expect to see that knee-jerk reaction higher in the dollar, but a lot of that is starting to get priced in so that knee-jerk reaction may not lost for that long a period of time.

As we go into Q1 what we traditionally see is a relative pick up in the data story and that often helps to support some of the risk-on currencies and works a little bit against the dollar. What we are thinking about from an Asia perspective at least is that we see the dollar rallying on a taper announcement, starting to come off as the data looks a bit better through Q1 but then the dollar starting to strengthen through the course of 2014 as some of the structural issues come back into light for Asia.

Q: In 2014 what is the risk that some of the emerging market currencies will revisit their 2013 lows? Is there a risk that Indian rupee will go back to 68-69 and similarly for some of the other emerging market currencies?

A: We do not there is as big a risk that we get such sharp news in terms of moving to those levels. Our core view is that we would head towards the mid-60s by the end of the year after an improvement for a currency like the Indian rupee in Q1.

Across all of Asia, we do still sense there are some structural difficulties that need to be addressed. So for some currencies that is widening external balances or narrowing surpluses, also strong credit growth in some currencies which has become less productive in terms of its impact on growth and also some of the policymaker constraints have slightly increased from the past.

We still think there will be some difficulties for Asia as a whole. We would probably differentiate that and say that the South Asian and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) currencies will face more difficulties whereas the Northern Asian currencies will do a little it better through the course of 2014, but as I said, as we move further into the year there will be more of a focus on those domestic issues and a lot will depend on the reform programs that do end up coming through.

TCS gains 2% as CEO expects FY15 to be better than FY14

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 17 Desember 2013 | 14.02

Shares of  Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) surged more than 2 percent after the company said that it expects 2014-15 to be better than the ongoing fiscal on account of uptick in client spending in the US and Europe.

\\"2014-15 will be a better than 2013-14 as per the initial talks that we have had with our clients. We expect a good growth overall -- retail, consumer goods and services, utilities, pharma, financial services, etc,\\" TCS CEO and Managing Director N Chandrasekaran told reporters.

Buoyancy in outsourcing demand and increasing confidence among clients is driving hopes for a better year for the USD 108 billion Indian IT-ITeS industry.

The country's largest software services exporter said that momentum is picking for social, mobile, analytics and cloud (SMAC) technologies, which offer a \\"multi-billion dollar opportunity\\" in revenues for the company in the next 3-5 years.

\\"When we started 2013-14, we had said it will be a good years and we will still stick to that. This has been a year in which normal business performance has been good. But for digital it has been a very good year,\\" he said.

SMAC technologies are driving enormous opportunities across sectors and the firm is poised to \\"leverage the opportunities on the back of enormous investments it has made on them,\\" he added.

While the Indian IT sector weathered effects of sluggish global economy and currency fluctuations, the proposed US Immigration Reform Bill still remains a concern until further clarity on the final Bill.

Even as rivals have taken a 'cautiously optimistic' view of the environment, TCS has remained confident of the outsourcing demand pipeline.

Meanwhile, CLSA has an outperform rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 2,300 apiece, citing solid demand environment outlook for IT and TCS hopeful of sustainability through FY15.

\\"Business size and innovation in delivery will help maintain valuations,\\" CLSA report said.

JP Morgan on Monday said it is neutral on IT major TCS, but it raised target on the stock to Rs 2,300 from Rs 2,100 apiece.

\\"TCS is trading at 15 percent premium to Infosys' target multiple of 16.5 times and exhibits better revenue growth profile than Infosys,\\" JP Morgan reasoned.

At 12:02 hours IST, the stock was trading at Rs 2,061.85, up 2.21 percent over previous close on the BSE.

Senate confirms Johnson as US Homeland Security head

The US Senate on Monday confirmed Jeh Johnson, a national security expert who has served as the Pentagon's top lawyer, as head of the US Department of Homeland Security.

Johnson, who was the Defense Department's general counsel during President Barack Obama's first term, will succeed Janet Napolitano, who left in September to become the president of the University of California system.

The Senate approved Johnson on a vote of 78-16 as part of a raft of confirmations pushed forward after a recent rule change stripped Republicans of their power to block nominees with a procedural roadblock known as a filibuster.

Obama said in a statement that he was pleased that Johnson was confirmed with broad bipartisan support.

"Jeh will play a leading role in our efforts to protect the homeland against terrorist attacks, adapt to changing threats, stay prepared for natural disasters, strengthen our border security, and make our immigration system fairer - while upholding the values, civil liberties, and laws that make America great," he said.

The Senate also confirmed Anne Patterson, the US ambassador to Egypt, as an assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs. Like Johnson, she was approved by a vote of 78-16.

The Senate is also expected this week to confirm Janet Yellen as chair of the Federal Reserve, before it recesses for the year. Yellen is now the Fed's vice chair.

12:12pm Expert on GSK Pharma open offer

After London-listed GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) announced a voluntary open offer to increase its stake to 75 percent in its Indian subsidiary GSK Pharma, the valuation of the stock has sky-rocketed indicating confidence by foreign company in Indian market.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Yogesh Radke, head of Quantitative Research, Edelweiss Securities expects the acceptance ratio to inch upto 90-100 percent if one enters into tendering the open offer given the high holding of long-term investors and also the fact that a lot of fundamental experts would like to hold the stock even at Rs 3,100. GSK Pharma is currently trading around Rs 2,940.

Radke believes that despite the whipsaws in the market, stocks like GSK must be held in portfolio and so, retail investors can continue holding the stock. However, if the investor is keen to exit, it is better to exit now rather than tendering into the open offer, he adds.

12:02pm The market is consistently holding its upmove amid consolidation as investors are waiting for cues from RBI policy and Federal Reserve meeting.

The Sensex added 84.07 points to 20,743.59, and the Nifty rose 23.45 points to 6,178.15. About 1111 shares have advanced, 790 shares declined, and 147 shares are unchanged.

S Naren, CIO, equities, ICICI Prudential Asset Management advises Indian investors to move away from their underweight on equities stance to more neutral.

"We have seen that historically election years have been very good years. There has been the start of the good bull market and that is pretty positive for equities at this point of time. So I think investors should move to a more neutral stance and at this point of time they are far away from a neutral stance and they need to increase their allocation to equities to reach that neutral stance," he elaborated.

Glenmark Pharma , IndusInd Bank , Aurobindo Pharma , Wockhardt , Infosys , Apollo Tyres , HDFC Bank and State Bank of India are the most active shares on exchanges.

Expect rupee to trade on negative note today: Angel

Written By Unknown on Senin, 16 Desember 2013 | 14.02

Angel Broking's report on currency

On a weekly basis, Indian Rupee depreciated sharply by more than 1 percent on the back of decline in industrial production data and rise in retail inflation data during the week which had raised expectations of increase in interest rates by the central bank in its December 18 meeting. Also, slow exports data from the country in the month of November raised concerns over the economic growth, thereby adding downside pressure to the currency. Additionally, increased concerns of early QE taper due to string of positive economic data from the US acted as a negative factor for the currency.

Further, victory of BJP in recent state elections coupled with FII inflows could not provide respite to Rupee. The currency touched a weekly low of 62.29 and closed at 62.18 on Friday. For the month of December 2013, FII inflows totaled at Rs.8554.50 crores (USD1389.16 million) as on 13th December 2013. Year to date basis, net capital inflows stood at Rs.105604.40 crores (USD18888.80 million) till 13th December 2013.

Outlook
We expect the Rupee to trade on a negative note today taking cues from forecast for rise in wholesale inflation data. Further, weak market sentiments coupled with more than expected decline in industrial production and rise in retail inflation data in last week will act as a negative factor. However, sharp downside in the currency will be cushioned due to weakness in the DX.
